30: Guitarist Charlie Hunter on D'Angelo, limitation, and finding your voice
Guitarist Charlie Hunter is a true innovator who has collaborated with countless music legends including D’Angelo, John Mayer, Mos Def, Michael Franti, Ben Goldberg and Norah Jones.
Hunter developed a custom seven-string guitar on which he plays the role of both bassist and guitarist. His love of funk and groove oriented music make him an appealing collaborator for hip-hop and jazz players, but ultimately he has forged his own path as a bandleader and solo act.
In our conversation, he talks about how working within limitations can be freeing, which recordings continue to resonate with him, and how they achieved the memorable disconnected swing feel of D’Angelo’s album Voodoo. He also discusses the importance of finding the music you’re meant to play, even if it’s inconvenient, which is something that can be applied in all of life's journeys.
